'..Trump fully siding with the Russian tyrant and taking steps to betray Ukraine, a democratic ally.

The president of the United States has now bear-hugged an autocrat and accused war criminal who has been assisting Iran’s efforts to kill American service members and who for the past 10 years has been waging his own shadow war of disinformation and influence operations and cyberattacks against the United States and the West. Trump is helping this foe collect more oil revenue, and, at the same time, he’s denigrating Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and pressuring him to surrender to Putin. Trump is providing aid and comfort to the enemy.

..

Trump’s craving to stride the world side by side with Putin has been evident for many years. But Putin’s criminality and barbarity were obstacles. Now Trump has decided to move past that. Vlad is his man. Abandoning Ukraine is not a bothersome price for Trump to pay. He and Putin have been like lovers kept apart for too long. With just over two years left in his reign of madness..'

'Donald Trump has finally gotten what he has desired for years: a deal with Vladimir Putin.

The arrangement he reached with the Russian dictator—the United States will temporarily put aside sanctions on Russian-exported diesel fuel and Russia will supply millions of tons of diesel to the global market—has widely been dismissed by oil industry experts. The amount of diesel involved is a mere drop in the worldwide bucket, and its sale is unlikely to do much to lower the price of diesel in the United States, which is a net exporter of diesel. Trump’s idiotic war in Iran remains the main cause of higher oil prices.

But this agreement is tremendously significant, for it marks the culmination of both Trump’s decade-long effort to embrace Putin and Moscow’s decades-long effort (or operation) to cultivate Trump as an ally and useful idiot. Moreover, it has brought about a moment that was inevitable: Trump fully siding with the Russian tyrant and taking steps to betray Ukraine, a democratic ally.

This is no shocker.

Since the late 1980s, Trump has sought to strike a deal in the Soviet Union or Russia, as Russian money flowed into assorted projects of the Trump Organization in the United States and elsewhere. Soviet and Russian officials dangled the possibility of joint ventures before Trump in the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s, yet nothing materialized. Then in 2013, Trump held the Miss Universe contest in Moscow. He netted about $2 million from the venture, while his partner—an oligarch close to Putin who underwrote the pageant—lost about $10 million. Essentially, this was a transfer of wealth from one of Putin’s plutocrats to Trump. More important, when Trump announced the contest would be held in the Russian capital, he asked if Putin, a repressive thug, would become his “new best friend.” From that point on, Trump repeatedly signaled he yearned to be a Putin BFF.

Following the Miss Universe contest, Trump once again tried to score a big development project in Moscow—but Putin’s illegal annexation of Crimea got in the way of that endeavor. Yet that did not stop Trump. While campaigning for president in 2015 and 2016, as he spoke positively of Putin, he secretly pursued a massive Moscow Trump Tower project, negotiating with Russian businessmen with suspected ties to Russian intelligence. He never bothered to tell voters about this side gig that ultimately did not come to pass. He even claimed he had nothing to do with Russia. A lie.

As a presidential candidate and then as chief executive of the United States, Trump aided and abetted Putin’s covert assault on the 2016 election—which was mounted by Putin in part to help Trump win the White House—by ceaselessly and loudly echoing Putin’s denials. With his constant braying that the Trump-Russia scandal was a “hoax” and “witch hunt” orchestrated by the Deep State, the Democrats, and the media, Trump has provided cover for a foreign adversary that has attacked American democracy repeatedly. This includes operations that targeted the 2018, 2020, and 2024 elections.

During his first stint as president, Trump defied his advisers and strove to be supportive of Putin, such as when he urged the G-7 nations that had kicked Putin out of the G-8 following his seizure of Crimea to welcome the Russian back. Or when he tried to muscle Zelenskyy to open an investigation to whip up evidence proving the bonkers conspiracy theory that Ukraine had somehow orchestrated the Russia scandal. He told aides that he had learned of this plot from Putin. (Hmmm.) His attempt to absolve Putin—twinned with his effort to force Ukraine to manufacture evidence of corruption related to Joe Biden—led to Trump’s first impeachment.

In 2020, Trump even helped spread derogatory disinformation about Biden that, according to his own administration, had been cooked up by a Russian intelligence operation. The president of the United States assisted Putin’s assaults on American democracy.

For at least 13 years, Trump has displayed a deep and bizarre affinity for Putin, as I chronicle in my latest book, How Russia Won: Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin, and the Fight for America. During his first term in the White House, this was a source of profound puzzlement for Trump’s top national security aides. Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats wondered whether the Russians had something on Trump. There has been widespread speculation on this possibility. My take (in brief): The Russians might indeed possess compromising material on Trump—though not a “pee tape”—but Moscow has not had to use any of it. Trump has not been coerced into his man-crush on Putin.

Fiona Hill, who handled the Russian portfolio at the National Security Council at that time, concluded that when Trump gazed at Putin he saw an incredibly wealthy autocrat who possessed total authority, and he longed to emulate all of that. Trump has repeatedly displayed his affection for dictatorial rulers. But amid his stanning for other tyrants—Kim Jong Un, Xi Jinping, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi—his mooning over Putin stands out.

During his first administration, as has been widely noted, Trump was surrounded by advisers who constructed various guardrails. Consequently, he was not free to forge the bond with Putin that he wished for. The second time around, he’s no longer encumbered in this fashion. It was only a matter of time before he would—after all those years—make real his love for Putin.

From the start of Trump 2.0, it was obvious that the president viewed the Ukraine war mainly as a nuisance that blocked the path to a beautiful relationship between him and Putin. He doesn’t care about Ukrainian democracy. (He doesn’t care about American democracy.) He doesn’t care about the violation of international laws and norms—or the preservation of a rules-based international order. He wants to dominate what he perceives as an American sphere of influence, as Putin seeks to do in his neck of the woods. What animates him is the possibility of concocting deals and running the world with Putin (with Xi as a third wheel).

But poor Trump was stuck with a status quo in which the United States was expected to maintain its commitments to Ukraine, which included the provision of armaments and intelligence. Trump couldn’t quite toss Zelenskyy and Ukraine overboard. But he repeatedly conveyed the message that he was just not into them. He periodically dressed down Zelenskyy and blamed him for the war. He and his not-ready-for-prime-time negotiators—Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner—kept leaning on Zelenskyy to cut a deal. That meant ceding territory to Putin, even land that Ukraine still controls. That is, reward the fascist aggressor.

Which brings us to recent days. In sync with the diesel deal, Trump has been squeezing Zelenskyy. He said the Ukrainian was responsible for the war. He called on Zelenskyy to leave office. He decried him as a “dictator.” He claimed that Zelenskyy had swindled $350 billion in military assistance out of the United States and falsely stated half of those funds were “missing.” He falsely maintained the United States has provided more funding to Ukraine than Europe has. He suggested Zelenskyy wants to continue the war to “keep the ‘gravy train’ going.” In an interview with Fox News, JD Vance praised Putin as “very deliberate and measured in his words” and noted he “cares about Russia’s interests as he sees them”—casting the war criminal as a reasonable guy.

There has been more than just gum-flapping. The Trump administration apparently paused the sharing of intelligence with Ukraine—which the Ukrainians desperately need to defend against Russia’s missile attacks. (On Monday, Zelenskyy said that Ukraine did not receive intelligence on the latest Russian missile attack on Kyiv.) Ukraine charged that Elon Musk’s SpaceX temporarily imposed new limits on the military-grade Starlink terminals used by Ukrainian forces and, thus, impeded Kyiv’s ability to conduct drone attacks and intercept Russian drones. (Musk says the Pentagon and the White House controlled this technology; the White House said it did not.) Trump angrily demanded that Ukraine cease its attacks on Russian oil facilities. (After refraining from such strikes for three days, Zelenskyy defied Trump and said Ukraine would resume these attacks.) Trump proclaimed an “energy ceasefire,” which Putin ignored, and Trump did not press Russia to end its assault on Ukraine’s power grid. He signed an executive order to prevent the imposition of harsher sanctions on Russia made possible by legislation recently passed by Congress.

The Trump administration also requested that European countries unfreeze Russian assets impounded after Putin’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and transfer them to an entity that would be overseen by the US government. So Trump could control those funds? What a nice gift it would be to return them to Putin. (The Europeans told Trump to get lost.) And now Putin has proposed a summit with Trump and Xi—but not Zelenskyy—to supposedly end the war. The Trump White House did not shoot down the idea. So a new Axis of Evil might be forming.

Trump’s argument for the diesel deal is absurd. He and his lieutenants once contended—as a bargaining chip for Russia—that if the war in Ukraine was resolved, an array of opportunities for US-Russian business deals would arise, which is what the Trumpers have cared about the most. Now they say that reaching a business agreement with Putin before any resolution of this horrific conflict will create a path to peace. Their ridiculous position is to hand Putin the carrot first and then see what happens.

Trump has never held Putin responsible for the war. He has repeatedly said that Putin wishes for the war to end, and he asserts the Russian is pursuing peace. This is beyond appeasement. Trump has been running a disinformation campaign on Putin’s behalf—while haranguing Zelenskyy as the impediment to peace and now urging his defenestration. With these latest actions, Trump is making it easier for his pal Putin to triumph in Ukraine.

Commentators on Russian state-controlled media get it, and they are hailing Trump. “Well done, Trump,” one of Putin’s pundits proclaimed. “Today he’s on our side!” Though Trump is an erratic fellow capable of changing course, that appears to be an accurate characterization. He’s with Putin.

Asked about Trump taking his relationship with Putin to the next level, Zelenskyy did not hold back: “He speaks about it, openly and loudly, that he loves such people, and he respects such people.” Fact-check: True. Zelenskyy added, “How can Trump be friends with him? I think that it’s a mistake.”

Vlad is his man. Abandoning Ukraine is not a bothersome price for Trump to pay. He and Putin have been like lovers kept apart for too long. With just over two years left in his reign of madness and facing a likely drubbing in the midterms, Trump has resolved to make his dream a reality. They can be together. That was always the plan. That was always the destiny.

Trump has gotten what he wanted. So, too, has Putin.´

'This will be known as the week the USA pivoted from an informal ally of Russia, helping Putin kill Ukrainians and trying to bully Ukraine into handing over its territory and people to the Russian dictator, to a formal ally of Russia. The US government, under the lead of its democratically elected President and without any meaningful opposition in Congress, is now going to great lengths to hobble the Ukrainian military machine. The Starlink/Starshield limitations are by far the most important example of this and just how this has worked out over the last few days will be the lead story. In a word, the US-Russian alliance is being sealed in Ukrainian blood.

Note that yesterday as part of this alliance the USA formally exempted Russia from the Graham-Blumenthal sanctions, with a formal order being issued by the White House..

With the US-Russian alliance becoming more formal, the key thing this time will be the Ukrainian and European reaction. European states seem to be a little all over the place; however Ukraine finally seems to get it. It is now openly doing the one thing Trump was begging them not to do. That is the way to treat a Russian ally.
You might understand then why Trump is so keen to come to Putin’s aid. The Russian army is struggling badly.

..As of the most recent reports, Ukrainian access to Starlink/Starshield remains limited to systems travelling at fewer than 160kph/100mph .. Musk brought up the idea unprompted, and only then did Trump agree.

..Being buddies with Putin (which both Trump and Musk are) is actually not a popular position to take, especially when you are helping Putin slaughter Ukrainian civilians and when it is seen that you are keeping the Ukrainians from fighting back effectively. Both Trump and Musk had, because of their pro-Putin proclivities, probably convinced themselves that they could take such a position and it would be ok. It was not.

..

Of course, the really important thing is that the US government, even being aware of these political/economic risks, is willing to step up at this crucial moment and become a Russian ally..

..

So the alliance is operating, even if Trump is trying not to take responsibility. And it is having a real strategic and human effect. It has a real value to Putin, none at all to the USA, but that does not matter to the US government now, which is intent on weakening the USA wherever possible.

It is the most dishonorable deal in modern US history, and it is being written in Ukrainian blood.

Ukraine Seems To Get It This Time

At times the Ukrainians have seemed to grasp that the US under Trump is their determined enemy, but at times they seem willfully to try and forget that reality. We have seen both over the last few days. When Trump, exactly a week ago, first announced a Russia-Ukraine energy ceasefire, which neither Russia or Ukraine had actually accepted, the Ukrainians actually went along. They stopped their attacks on Russian refineries for three days, as a sign of goodwill to the US president.

As if that would matter.

The Russians, of course, did not care in the slightest and attacked Ukrainian power supply within minutes of Trump’s announcement.

Now, however, Russian oil facilities (and some very strategic ones) are burning again. Once it was clear that the Russians did not care, and that the US as, a Russian ally, was cutting Ukraine off from Starlink/Starshield, the Ukrainians restarted their campaign in earnest.

On October 15, they attacked the large refinery in Ryazan, causing the refinery to halt operations. Then, last night, the Ukrainians launched a “massive” attack on the key Russian fuel storage and shipping facility located in the St. Petersburg area. The pictures from that indicated that a great deal of fuel was burning.

Remember, these attacks are the kind that the Ukrainians developed independently of Starlink/Starshield, so the US can do nothing to help the Russians with them (beyond bullying the Ukrainians). And Ukraine must now accelerate these as it is clear that they are having such strategic effect that they are forcing the US-Russia alliance to go public.

For 21 months Zelensky had, because of his own proclivities and because of advice, sucked it up and taken abuse from the USA because he believed speaking the truth would get him into trouble. Far better he was being told/believed to be a good boy and try to flatter Trump (and Musk) to get some crumbs from the table.

With that stratagem (a disastrous one) having led Ukraine to this terrible point of exposure and abandonment, Zelensky and the Ukrainian government seem to have understood reality. It was noticeable that Zelensky decided to let rip at both Trump and Musk. The Ukrainian president accused Trump of betrayal a number of times in the last few days, most famously in an interview with Piers Morgan. Here was how one story quoted the Morgan-Zelensky exchange.

..

..speak and act on the truth. The US is an ally of Russia in a war being waged to destroy Ukraine as a country and a people. They must fight their war without illusions on this.

Ukraine Keeps Steadily Progressing In The Land War

One thing that needs to be understood about Trump’s increased public support for Russia and his desire to hurt Ukraine is that it is being motivated by Russian failure not Russian success. Trump has spent years assuring the world that Russia is a great power, destined to win the war. However, as he is assuredly being told, that is not the case with the ground in this war. In fact, the last week confirmed that Russian struggles are not ending.'

'Iran's vast and restive southeastern province of Sistan-Baluchistan, located along the border with Afghanistan and Pakistan, has witnessed a deadly flare-up of violence in recent weeks.

..

Sistan-Baluchistan, Iran's second largest province and roughly the same size as Syria, is particularly strategic and sensitive.

It borders Taliban-ruled Afghanistan and Pakistan's Balochistan Province, which has also been the scene of a decades-long insurgency.

Sistan-Baluchistan is also home to Chabahar, Iran's only port with direct access to the open ocean. It allows Iran to bypass the Strait of Hormuz, a major flashpoint in the war with the United States and Israel.

'The Islamic Republic drained Iran to build an empire outside its borders. Assad fell, the corridor broke and tens of billions belonging to the Iranian people disappeared with him.

Now even figures raised inside the regime’s own military establishment are admitting the outcome.

Iran paid. Syria was destroyed. The Islamic Republic lost.'
With forceful and strong European backing, they can keep taking the war to the Russians strategically and do not have to fold like Donald Trump is now stating.'

'Trump not only loves Putin, he wants to get paid..'

..

At some point Americans need to be honest about being accomplices in this Russian undertaking.

..

Now that the USA has joined China in being an open supporter of Russia in its war on Ukraine, there really is only one question. And that is, do Ukraine And Europe Understand What They Must Do?

It is on its surface a daunting question. The two superpowers of the moment are now backing Vladimir Putin. That is a nightmare for European policymakers, who have spent the recent period contorting themselves to do everything possible to keep the USA sweet. Now, even the most deluded of them have to understand what they are facing.

And yet, it is not a hopeless situation. Even though the two superpowers back Russia, Ukraine is still showing the advantage in the adaptation and initiative war, and is arguably in a better position this year than last. With forceful and strong European backing, they can keep taking the war to the Russians strategically and do not have to fold like Donald Trump is now stating.'

'..Donald Trump has been serially disloyal and unfaithful to every person in his life, except for Vladimir Putin. He craves the affection and approval of the Russian dictator, loves talking with him, loves doing Putin’s bidding and, most of all, loves being with him. Even in the midst of Trump’s most outrageous lies (remember when he was going to send Ukraine Tomahawk missiles in September/October 2025?), the truth was there for those willing to see it. At exactly that time, he also hung a picture of himself next to Putin very prominently in the White House (above a picture of himself with a granddaughter). His real affections were always there for those who wanted to admit it—indeed they were on display.

..He, and by extension the government of the United States of America, is Vladimir Putin’s friend and partner. He will help Putin, protect Putin, and do what he can to get the best possible deal for Vladimir Putin.

This time he probably cannot go back. The expressions of intense emotion of the last 24 hours are too clear for even the most gullible of the press (and that is most of them) to ever again start writing about the next, supposed Trump “pivot” to Ukraine. Trump is free now. His heart can sing the song he has always wanted to sing, and the American people can no longer deny that the USA is run by a Russian useful idiot or agent of influence (depending on the nomenclature you prefer). Personally I prefer agent of influence, because vast sums of money are also involved. Trump not only loves Putin, he wants to get paid. I tried to describe this concept not long after Trump’s second term began.

..

And, as I’ve said in the past, it is a good thing to know the truth. Having false hope that Donald Trump might actually help Ukraine, might provide the Ukrainians with meaningful military support, might actually drop the hammer on Putin has made things far, far worse. It has led to Ukraine being less well prepared for this horrible winter to come, has delayed Europeans getting their act together and has wasted so much time chasing unicorns and butterflies. This kind of hope has killed.

So it is a good thing for Trump to speak his truth forcefully and with conviction, and for people to see that and grasp it. The USA is with Russia and has been from January 2025. Do not believe me—Donald Trump is telling you all himself.

..

..The Russians really are waging a campaign directly against Ukrainian civilian resolve now. It is, as discussed last week, one of their only options as they are struggling so badly on the battlefield and in defending against Ukrainian long-range and mid-range strike.

The Russians are not “inevitably” winning as Trump would have you believe—they are still struggling. Indeed there are reports coming in this week that the Ukrainians are starting to push forward in different areas stretching in a large arc from Zaporizhzhia oblast all the way around to the Ukrainian border with Russia in Kharkiv oblast.

Moreover, Putin knows that he will suffer absolutely no blowback, at least from the USA, for massacring Ukrainian civilians with impunity. Indeed, he knows that the US government will praise him as it has this week, just as he is upping civilian attacks.

With forceful and strong European backing, they can keep taking the war to the Russians strategically and do not have to fold like Donald Trump is now stating.

A Ukrainian official came out and told the FT that this was now the first of many, that Ukraine will “burn” Russian refineries. It will be important to see if this happens. In the past the Ukrainians have, seemingly deliberately, dialled back on attacks on Russian oil installations of all types, perhaps as a way of signalling to Russia that they could work out a deal. Now, perhaps, they understand that this is not going to happen—not while the US backs Russia.

The more difficult answer to this question will come from European states. They really are on their own now. They have the economic and technological strength to help Ukraine win the war—but whether they have the political and strategic ability to utilize that strength is the unanswered question. We will have to look for answers to that in the coming weeks.

'Now, the US is coming out as a more direct supporter of Russia..'

'However, the real story here is not about diesel, it is about the US increasingly emerging as a supporter of Russia in this war. Since Trump became president for the second time, the USA has moved steadily to support Putin in his war to wipe out Ukraine. For most of the time that has been through limiting Ukraine and leaving Ukraine defenseless—so that Russia can bombard Ukraine mercilessly (which we are now seeing).

However, that has not been all. The US aid for Russia has extended to outright diplomatic support (all those UN votes, the Putin red-carpet visit, etc.), to spreading Russian disinformation (most recently by Marco Rubio this week), to even manipulating Ukraine and Ukrainian allies into doing what Russia wants (hopes and dreams in the USA). Yes, there have been limited crumbs thrown Ukraine’s way, but these have been to keep leverage over the Ukrainians, to see if they can be bullied into doing what Putin wants because of some deeply misguided hope and belief in the USA.

The truth of US behavior has been that the US has been helping Russia, but until now more by hobbling Ukraine and its partners. Now, the US is coming out as a more direct supporter of Russia—and in the process it is blaming the Ukrainians for that. The diesel issue is not an end in itself, it is a means to an end. Understand that, and you understand it all.'

'Commander of Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces Robert Brovdi, call sign “Magyar,” urged Ukrainians not to rely on expectations of a swift ceasefire or peace. According to him, Russia is instead escalating and using the current capabilities of attack drones to strike Ukraine’s rear areas.

The statement was made by Unmanned Systems Forces Commander Robert Brovdi “Magyar.”

According to him, Ukrainian society is now being sold the illusion of a quick ceasefire at the very moment when Russia is increasing pressure and threats.

“Putin is definitely not about peace. He wants blood, to the point of completely destroying us,” Brovdi said.

The Unmanned Systems Forces commander said Russia is currently exploiting what he called a “jet-Shahed window of opportunity” and concentrating its strikes on Ukraine’s rear areas. At the same time, in his assessment, the Russian army has achieved few significant successes on the battlefield throughout 2026.

Brovdi stressed that Ukraine must be guided by rational analysis of the situation rather than expectations of a swift end to the war.

According to him, the Defense Forces are already working on countermeasures against the enemy’s new capabilities, including rearmament. However, this will require time, and the timeframe depends on a number of factors.

“The front is difficult, the worm keeps pushing and will keep pushing, but it is being destroyed at an increasing rate,” the commander said.

He added that the Ukrainian army has hardened over the years of war and that society must also be prepared for a prolonged confrontation.

“Do not believe in illusions and miracles – we must rely on our own strength and on one another. That is the only way we will preserve our statehood and our Motherland,” Brovdi wrote.

In closing, the Unmanned Systems Forces commander said the “shed under a white flag” being offered to Ukraine would not provide security and could be burned down at the first opportunity.

“We will stand. Moscow will fall,” Magyar concluded.'

‘..Ukraine must behave as the Allies did in WW2, only a win, a comprehensive defeat of Russian imperialism will end it for two generations and beyond..’

– The Analyst, June 9, 2026 (Wrath, Pure Wrath against Russia)

'..the Russian milbloggers accept that the war cannot go on to the end of 2027 without destroying and collapsing the economy.'

'..the number one technologically advanced army in the world, that of Ukraine.

New strategy, new tactics, new technologies and new thinking that’s been in the works for a year has begun to deliver results.

As Russia maintains this extraordinary capacity to advance its long range strategic drone and missile warfare in an almost ridiculously close parallel to that of the Third Reich in 1944, on the front lines almost nothing has changed, it may even have gotten worse. Their response is not to produce or innovate but drag yet more men to their deaths in the hope that enough corpses piled up will create some kind of victory.

It was their answer in both world wars and it remains their answer now. They seem to believe that sending thousands of barely armed men without even a basic uniform – the state has actually cut back what it provides due to costs – and pour them into the field with three days basic training if they’re lucky, will overwhelm Ukrainian forces.

Instead what Ukraine finds is hundreds of men, some of the largest surrendered groups of the war and often including officers, who are so broken, so desperate for water they have been drinking their own urine. These men are mentally shattered, starving, emaciated and abandoned. Ukraine’s denial of logistics and supplies to the Russians on the front has left them stranded by their commanders, many of whom the prisoners say, just ran off.

..

By saying nothing and keeping operations under wraps week in week out, the Russians had nothing to counter claim and were busy making fools of themselves saying they had captured this town or that village – at one time in early September Putin personally made a claim, only to have a Ukrainian general walk over a bridge without a helmet and body armour in said town – making it obvious there wasn’t a Russian anywhere near, and that Ukraine controlled the town. This was shown to Putin who allegedly had a fit about it and wanted to know who was lying – the problem he hasn’t yet had dawn on him, is that its pretty much everyone.

..

Overall Ukraine has mastered a new tactical format – and we know the Russians were planning to use a similar system, largely because its the logical thing to do. The difference is this needs unity of purpose, belief in the mission and men who know why and what they’re doing. Russia absolutley does not have those characteristics in its arsenal. Its a sclerotic top down system with unmotivated poorly trained men who don’t want to be there. They would never make it work without a mindset shift a dictatorship just cannot countenance.

Ukraine has not had it all their own way. Russia’s anti-infrastructure and anti-civillian campaign is both ugly and typical of their barbarity. Its painful to see, to witness and to deal with. Despite it, it is of little consequence in the larger strategic picture because there is no scenario where it helps Russia win the war.

If anything its huge cost, the price of production, money and resources it consumes is way more than it returns. It will not change the war, just make it hurt and uncomfortable for those affected. Ukraine’s attacks however can – and they are, in combination with defeats on the battlefield, grinding down the Russian economy and its dilapidated war machine. Even the Russian milbloggers accept that the war cannot go on to the end of 2027 without destroying and collapsing the economy. Putin thinks otherwise, but I supect the truth has never been told to him, and it never will be, if that is, he could even recognise it anymore.

'..to beat a Russian armed attack.´

'But Europe must find more than willpower; it must also summon up a military strategy to beat a Russian armed attack. Senior European military staff have been considering this possibility and planning to fight the new conflict that has been seen in Ukraine.

Gen. Roly Walker, the British Army’s chief of staff, said in June that the UK-commanded, 21-nation [Allied Rapid Reaction Corps] must be able to do what a Ukrainian corps “can do today. That is persistent mid- and deep-range strikes . . . That is what stretches [Russian] front lines, what starves [them] . . . of the materiel and the people to sustain that defense. And then be able to, at their weakest points, strike deep to turn a flank. All the while dismantling any attempt they have, to mobilize for attack and to get close.”

New British acquisitions including autonomous and remote systems will be deployed by the army to the alliance’s eastern flank over the next year, “in much greater numbers . . . ready to strike and act within 30 minutes.”

Across Europe, Ukraine’s experience is beginning to reshape not simply what armies buy, but how they expect to fight. The emerging model relies on dispersing forces, generating affordable mass through autonomous systems, and shortening the time that separates battlefield experience and technological adaptation.

..

So, Europe is preparing to fight. Recent assessments suggest that European NATO already possesses sufficient personnel and platforms to contest a Russian offensive, while current investments should improve its resilience over the next several years.'

Last UK and US troops leave Iraq as anti-Islamic State mission ends (no replies)

'The last British and American troops have left Iraq after a military presence of more than a decade in the country.

The exit of the remaining UK military personnel - around 100 - from Irbil, in the northern Kurdistan region, was co-ordinated over recent weeks with US forces, who also departed on Wednesday.

It follows an agreement between the US and the Iraqi government, signed two years ago, to withdraw foreign troops by the end of this month.

British and US forces have been present in Iraq since 2014, as part of the international coalition to help defeat the extremist Islamic State (IS) group. Their departure brings the mission, known as Operation Inherent Resolve, to an end.

Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi said the end of the coalition's mission marked "Iraq's transition to a phase in which it assumes full responsibility for its security and stability".

Iraq is set to hold four "Sovereignty Days" as a national holiday to mark the withdrawal.

"Following more than a decade of operations, training and capacity building, Iraqi Security Forces (ISF) and the Kurdish Peshmerga have secured the enduring territorial defeat of Daesh in Iraq and are now well placed to take primary responsibility for the country's security," the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) said in a statement, referring to IS by an Arabic acronym.

"With these objectives achieved, Iraq and its international partners can begin a new chapter focused on enduring security co-operation under Iraqi leadership."

US President Donald Trump celebrated the withdrawal, calling it a "victory for the United States, a victory for Iraq, and a decisive victory over ISIS".

Writing in a Truth Social post, the president added: "It has been a long time, with very bad decision-making that got us involved in this quagmire in the first place, but soon, that will be part of History."

Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell also said the coalition's departure from Irbil marked "the successful conclusion of the military mission that defeated [IS] in Iraq".

He added: "The primary responsibility for addressing Iraq's remaining security challenges, including [IS] remnants and Iran-aligned militias that undermine Iraqi sovereignty and regional stability, now rests with the government of Iraq."

The Iraqi government declared the military defeat of IS in 2017, but coalition forces remained to help prevent the group's resurgence.

A recent UN report assessed that sustained counter-terrorism pressure by Iraqi security forces had left IS with several hundred fighters who were "able to carry out unsophisticated operations only".

The Iraqi government also faces the challenge of Iranian-backed militias in the country.

Zaidi, who took office in May, has vowed to disarm them and bring all weapons under state control following the coalition's exit.

But several powerful factions have resisted his plans and could now see their influence grow without the US presence.

Since the start of the US and Israel's war with Iran earlier this year, militias have been targeting the remaining US and UK forces stationed at Irbil air base.

Hundreds of Nato troops stationed in Baghdad left the country in March as tensions rose.

A BBC team visited the coalition base in Irbil in April this year, during a fragile ceasefire between the US and Iran.

They were forced to circle the base in an RAF transport aircraft while drones were being launched nearby.

At the height of the US bombing campaign against Iran, the coalition base was being targeted by up to 28 drones and missiles a day.

RAF Regiment Gunners, who were among the last British military personnel stationed there, had shot down more than 100 drones in the first six weeks of the war. Many of the attack drones were being launched by Iranian-backed militias in Iraq.

On Wednesday, signalling the end of the mission, the MoD paid tribute to UK personnel who had contributed to the counter-IS mission.

It said they had provided "valuable support, training and assistance" to more than 111,000 members of the Iraqi Security Forces, including more than 21,000 Peshmerga forces in the semi-autonomous Kurdistan Region.

It also said the RAF had conducted thousands of sorties, striking more than 2,300 IS targets. The RAF is expected to continue flying missions over neighbouring Syria, to prevent the remnants of IS from gaining a foothold.

The Pentagon said the US would continue to provide "targeted training and intelligence support" to its Iraqi partners.

US Central Command said the coalition's joint taskforce remained operational and was now based in Jordan.

US forces will also continue their mission against IS in Syria, where the UN estimates that the group has up to 3,000 fighters.

This is the third time US and UK forces have withdrawn from Iraq.

Tens of thousands of US and British troops were deployed to the country in 1991 following Saddam Hussein's invasion of Kuwait.

They returned to Iraq in 2003, when US President George W Bush ordered Operation Iraqi Freedom to remove the dictator from power and eliminate weapons of mass destruction that turned out not to exist.

The fierce sectarian insurgency that engulfed Iraq following the invasion cost tens of thousands of lives, including those of nearly 4,500 US military personnel and 179 British military personnel.

US and UK forces left Iraq in 2011, only to return three years later, when IS threatened to take control of the country.
..Putins biggest failure has always been a strategic blindness to his nations capabilities..

..Ukraine [will break] them .. having the moral right on [their] side .. Ukraine must make Russians lives unbearable .. They must break Russia’s economy far more quickly and far more rapidly .. They must tear up the mobilization process .. [and] logistics.
