Hi, here are some observations based on 100% experience (no "I guess" or "should be")...

I use my computer for calculations... quantum mechanical chemistry problems. I have a dual athlon and those things are taxed to 100% most of the time. Every calculation I do has a log file and every element of every calculation is timed, so I have very good tabs on performance. Since calculations can take days each, performance is important to me. I've tried many distros, here are my results...

* Worst: redhat (don't know why... i386 optimized maybe?)
* Better: gentoo or Mandrake (no real noticeable difference)
* Far better: Mandrake with selective components recompiled with Intel compiler (yes, even though it's an athlon, it helps a LOT!)

Why is Mandrake better than gentoo with selective recompilations? Because you avoid a configuration nightmare. With Mandrake I can do a full install in less than half an hour, recompile a few RPMS and go go go! Another advantage is low maintenance.
