SourceMandriva today announced that the Federal Service on Technical and Export Control (FSTEC) in Russia has agreed to authorise the certification of the Mandriva Linux OS for all safe and legal use in organizations dealing with confidential information. The certification process will be finished in 3 to 6 months. This decision was released during a conference on “Information security: regional aspects”.This conference was organised by the Academy of Information Systems and Federal Service on Technical and Export Control which encompasses the Ministry of Information Technologies and Communications of the Russian Federation, the Federal Service of Security (FSS), Rosinformtechnologies, the Ministry of Justice, other ministries and federal agencies of the Russian Federation, a number of regional administrations and ministries and commercial companies.
Mandriva development is carried out jointly by Mandriva's offices in Russia, France and Brazil. The Mandriva Linux OS is thus considered a national OS for Russia. The decision of FSTEC of the Russian Federation (RF) implied that Russian public agencies will be authorised to use the Mandriva Linux OS on PCs running confidential information. The certified Mandriva Linux will open the way for using Linux on workstations for public sector agencies of Russia and other organizations dealing with confidential information.
It is highly important for public sector agencies that Mandriva has 5 training courses at its base all run in Russian. At present Mandriva.Ru provides centers in Moscow and St Petersburg. Qualified instructors run training programs on systems ranging from Linux basics to network administration. All courses are certified by the independent organization LPI (Linux Professional Institute). Training centers based in all relevant cities in Russia provide Mandriva courses.
Versions of Mandriva Linux supplied are: Mandriva PowerPack+, Corporate Desktop, Mandriva Corporate Server, Mandriva Flash. Certification of Mandriva will be independent of the hardware platform used, and all products mentioned conformed to Russian customers' requirements.
The FSTEC-certified Mandriva Linux package will include:
* The official Mandriva Linux distribution, as verified by the FSTEC,
* Documentation package (including a copy of the FSTEC certificate, and FSTEC conclusion),
* The Media Kit,
* A USB-drive for obtaining certified updates.
There are a number of laws and statutory acts regulating confidential information and personal data in Russian Federation (RF). Requirements of these laws are expected in all public agencies and any other organizations dealing with confidential information including banks, insurance companies and telecommunication companies. The regulatory body for information security is the FSTEC and Federal Service of Security (FSS) of the Russian Federation (RF). The use of certified software eliminates risks of sanctions by FSS and FSTEC.
